Bologna
Bologna is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, located in the North of Italy near to the region I live in, Veneto. Bologna is famous for having one of the oldest universities in the western world (older than the University of Padua!) Apparently, it is also the seventh largest city in Italy and obviously the home to Bolognese sauce (ragu alla bolognese - as they say here in Italy).
Other famous food from this region are: Parma ham, lambrusco, tortellini, tagliatelle, the list goes on. (Perhaps I am way overdue a food post)
This past weekend I finally got to see Bologna for a much deserved mini break.
I stuffed myself with lasagne and then went to see the University museum and another art gallery. If I can remember the name of it I will add it here! Bologna surprised me because there was a lot of traditional art of course but there's a big street art scene and liberal vibe to the city. Very 21st century indeed. Bologna is somewhat famous in Italy for being a very liberal city with a rich history which has mostly been propelled by its students. There is so much to do in Bologna, in the summer there are outdoor cinemas in the main piazza where you can watch classic movies, you can also see many wonderful old museums and artefacts. There is a trendy and international food scene here, you can find snacks and restaurants with cuisine from various different countries, a wider variety than in many other regions. Finally the people of Bologna are very modern and very open to new things and new people. Friends who have studied here sing its praises, all who have visited only relate positive memories.
Long story short: drink coffee, and visit Bologna.
